In my mind, the premiere "metalcore" band. Converge figured out how to bridge the genres of hardcore punk and metal (especially thrash), leaving behind some of the worst tendencies of either genre, while adding an emotional dimension that is too often missing. Every album in Converge's lengthy discography is a progression. I'd recommend starting with Jane Doe, but you certainly couldn't go wrong anywhere.
